Dear Endearing Indelible Souls,

I’ve dedicated my year to experiencing more joy and love, and thought I’d share some of my results with you.

I began by exploring what stops me from experiencing more love and joy, and in almost every case it’s resistance. I’ve become more aware of my initial resistance to most things. My first response is often a big no. I’m able to trust my intuitive responses, where I “know” whether to say a fast yes or no to something. This initial resistance feels different. I automatically say “no” to almost everything at first, and resist forward movement. Then I produce lists of reasons to support the resistance!

So I’ve been experimenting with going past the initial resistance, ignoring the lists of reasons, and seeing if I can find myself a “new view.” Instead of “listening” to my initial resistance, I’m focusing on the new view, and am experiencing brand-new joys and increased love.

For part of my summer vacation, I spontaneously decided to go to British Columbia in Canada, which involved quick planning, riding on seaplanes, and going alone to a learning center where most people would be taking classes together. My initial resistance started its familiar clamor, and I just smiled and said:

“That’s okay. We’re going anyway.”

Whatever information came to me about the trip, I just moved along. I found out that I could only bring 24 pounds (total!) on the seaplane, and began throwing almost everything out of my bag.

British ColumbiaMy “new view” brought me purple starfish (see my September eLetter for photo), kayaking at night through bioluminescent water, building bonfires, eating homemade ice cream, making fabulous and funny friends, and wearing the same clothes almost every day (and I didn’t care at all).

Recently, my friends Val and Clark asked if I would ever consider changing my hairstyle. I quickly said no, and then listed the reasons why not. One of my biggest reasons (resistances) was the fact that I’d had the same hairstyle for 15 years, why change it?

GateVal gently said: “Wouldn’t it be FUN to try something new?”

(Isn’t it annoying when your friends remind you what you told them?)

Clark suggested that I might be stuck in the old familiar haircut. (He was right.)

Val went with me to a new hair stylist who asked: “Can I just cut what I see, or do I need to leave length so you’re more comfortable?”

I took a deep breath and told him to cut what he saw.

The results are adorable. It’s a shorter haircut than I’ve had in years, and I just love it. It feels fun and playful, and I’m receiving lots of compliments. It’s caused me to try other new things, too. I truly feel that I have a new view of everything. It feels like the gift of getting past initial resistance.

I know at this point you might wish to see a photograph of my new hairstyle. I’m currently resisting doing that and could produce my list of reasons, but instead I’ll just ask for your patience and imagination.

May I ask if there’s anything you’re currently resisting? Or, a new view you’ve experienced as a result of not resisting? You can let me know at my Glorious Guestbook.

I’ve noticed that my resistance seems to melt when I name it in some way, like writing it down.

Thank you so much to everyone who sent a 40th birthday greeting or energy to my brother Andrew.

He laid on my floor with his head on my exercise ball, my laptop on his stomach, reading the messages and chuckling.

Thank you also to everyone participating in the “Letters of Support and EnCOURAGEment” project. They’re just starting to come in, and I’m so excited to see the envelopes. Please consider joining us with your letter or postcard. More details are here for you.

October 8th is the two-year anniversary of my mother’s death (“Marvelous Majorie”), and I feel her spiritual presence everyday and especially miss her physical laughter so much. I am glad to say that I’ve received so many gifts and lessons from her death and her life.

Deeply, and sweetly, Susan (AKA SARK)
